Introduction to Andrew the CS Major

Hello! My name is Andrew and I am a junior majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics. I chose CS because I have liked coding since high school and software engineering is a field that is growing really quickly. I added a math major because it only required taking 3 extra math classes, plus Spanish. This summer I will be interning in Dallas which I'm really excited about. I have lived most of my life in Fairfax, Virginia, a suburb of Washington D.C. However, I was born in Boca Raton, Florida. In addition, I have lived in Italy for one year when I was in the seventh grade. My favorite book is Ender's Game, as it is the only book that I've ever read multiple times. My favorite sports teams are the OKC Thunder and Juventus. My favorite food would have to be steak, closely followed by Pad Thai.

When I have some free time I like to play NBA 2K with my roommates, but my favorite video game ever is The Witcher 3.  On-campus I am involved with Soonerthon, I-CCEW, and the Competetive Programming Team. My break was pretty fun, as I got to go home and see a lot of my friends from high school for the first time in a year. We went camping the first weekend back and then went down to UVA for New Year's Eve.  However, I was most excited to see my dog, Giorgio. He is a mix of American Eskimo and Spitz. He's getting pretty old now, but he is still super energetic. After that, I went drove to and stayed in Houston for a few days, then drove up to Norman. I'm very excited to start this semester, and this class seems like it's going to be a lot of fun.

  1. Hi Andrew!

It's nice to meet you! I'm a senior in mechanical engineering expecting to graduate this May! I personally chose mechanical engineering because I always accompanied my dad in his workshop and developed an interest in learning more about the mechanical aspects of gadgets and machinery. Also, a fun fact is that I actually grew up near Dallas for fourteen years before my family moved to rural Oklahoma. I think you'll enjoy your experience there this summer, and I wish you the best!

  2. Hey Andrew!

Between Fairfax, Boca Raton, Italy and now Norman, it sounds like you've had quite the variety of living experiences growing up. It's good to see that you still ended up as an OKC Thunder fan though! I hope to see more of your work throughout this semester, and good luck with all of your classes!

P.S. I'm going to need to see some pictures of Giorgio at some point, he sounds like a wonderful dog!

  3. Hi Andrew!

My stepdad's a programer, too, and I've always been really impressed with people who can code. I personally don't have the patience for it, so kudos to you for studying it! Software engineering IS a huge market, and the demand for people who can do that is growing all the time.
I love gaming, too, but I'm still stuck with the same Xbox 360 I've had since high school (if anyone wants to throw some money at me so I can get a newer console, I'm accepting donations), but I've seen playthroughs of the Witcher 3 and it looks amazing. I played the Witcher 2, but couldn't get into it because of the kind of clunky graphics. So, consider me super jealous.

    Good luck this semester!

  5. Hey Andrew!

Wow, I'd say you've had quite a fun time growing up, staying in various cities! I have a friend who is graduating this semester as a CS major and she has had a lot more fun in her major than I have. She's been able to create her own games and I have been stuck learning about the sciences of life. Congrats on the internship for this semester, that will be super exciting! This winter was definitely a different one, where you wouldn't have frozen your finger and toes off.

  6. Hey Andrew! First off, that picture makes me crave a nice juicy steak. Shout out to the dude who reps the OKC Thunder! As a fellow fan, I can honestly say I'm a bit surprised we're doing as well as we are. Hopefully, this comment ages well. Congratulations on getting an internship! I know in the world of computer science that's a pretty big deal and can be a huge foot in the door going forward, so best of luck! I, like so many others, got drawn into the Witcher show on Netflix and I've always heard the game was good but never found time to get into the series. The shows definitely peaked my interest; I'll have to check it out soon. Best of luck going forward, I'll be looking forward to reading your posts!

  7. Hey Andrew!

Congrats on the internship, those are huge additions to a resume for when you have to start applying for jobs next year. My times as intern have helped me get to where I'm at today and I hope you get a lot of good experience from it. Lastly, I assume you like your steaks medium-rare from the picture and salute you as someone who lives with a bunch of people who only get their's well-done.

  8. Hi Andrew!

I have a few friends that are also Computer Science majors, so that's awesome! And congrats on your internship! What company is it with? Also, I LOVE the D.C. area so I think it's super cool that you're from there. I think it's so beautiful and there's just so much history, it's just so interesting to me. That's so cool that you got to live in Italy, what made that happen?

  9. Hi Andrew!

I have a lot of respect for computer science majors because I took a coding class in high school, and when my code failed and all the red error lines showed up, I got frustrated easily. I am sure you must have a lot more patience than me! I also love Ender's Game, but I did not like the parts of the book that featured Ender's siblings and their political "blog" or whatever they were doing...that confused me. Congrats on the internship (I live near Dallas!) and good luck this semester!

  10. Oh, I am such a fan of Orson Scott Card, Andrew! My favorite Ender book was Speaker for the Dead, which I accidentally read first, and that actually was pretty cool: with some book series it can mess you up to start with the wrong book, but I liked Speaker for the Dead so much that it made me want to read them all. And then I read Card's Alvin Maker series which I liked even better: you might give them a try sometime! They're kind of hard to describe: not fantasy, not historical fiction, but some weird in-between genre that is both at the same time: The Tales of Alvin Maker.
And about programming: are you interested in playing with Twine? It's a hypertext story system that people can use without any programming, but it supports real programming too, so that you can build true games with it! Here's their site (it's open source, with a browser-based version too): Twinery.org ... it's easy to get started (some Tech Tips), and I bet with your programming skills you could take it really far! Anyway, something to consider. I did a little nursery rhyme experiment with it last semester just to try out one of their new templates; here it is: Nursery Rhyme Maze. It was fun to make, and I hope it's fun to play. :-)

  11. Hey Andrew!
It is so good to meet you!
I think it is so cool that you get to intern in Dallas this summer, what a cool opportunity! One of my all time favorite foods is Pad Thai, if you have not tried it yet, you should go check out Thai Thai on Main street, I am from Norman and it is one of my favorite Thai places, I highly recommend! As for the OKC Thunder, I am slowly getting more and more into basketball since my boyfriend is a basketball fanatic, so I am trying to ramp up my knowledge.
Great to meet you! and I look forward to reading more of your future blog posts.
    Best wishes,
    Mikayla

  12. Hi Andrew,

It seems like you have lived in several different places and I find that so cool. Sadly I have been in Oklahoma most of my life. I went to Washington D.C for the first time in December and it was one of my favorite places. All of the monuments that they have and the museums are so interesting especially for a History nerd like me. The OKC Thunder is my favorite basketball team as well and I go to their games often. I am from Moore, Oklahoma but I live in Norman and my favorite part about going home to see my parents is that I get to see my two dogs.

  13. Hey Andrew!

There's no other way to eat a steak than medium rare and I'm glad to see that that's the picture you chose! There is a really good Thai restaurant right by campus corner called Pad Thai that you should check out if you haven't already been! I interned in Dallas this last summer and am planning on returning there after I graduate. It's a great city and you will definitely enjoy it!

  14. Hey Andrew! Thats amazing that you have seen so many different places! I have a friend that is in computer science and it does not seem easy! It seems like a great degree and job area to go into! Especially now that we use programs and computers for everything. I also love a good steak! its my favorite dinner! Great job on your intro post and hope you are doing well! Enjoy your semester and great job on all your accomplishments!

  15. Hey Andrew!

I'm glad to a see a computer science major in this class! Regretfully, I've only ever taken one coding class (intro to Python) in my time at OU, but I loved every minute of it and I still do projects with Python to this day. I would definitely not say that I am very good at coding, but I think that its so fun and is honestly a really great creative outlet to give shape to your wildest ideas. Also, I have to say, I think that a good medium rare steak is probably one of the best foods on the planet and I've traveled the world to eat! No matter where you go, a good steak is a good steak. Great to meet you!

  16. Hi Andrew,
I can't believe I haven't commented on your intro until now. But it is so nice to finally meet you. I think it is cool you are going after a computer science degree. I have taken several coding classes for my meteorology minor. I also agree with you that a medium rare steak is the best. I love that you agree with that theory. Hope you have a great last two weeks.

  17. Hi Andrew, it is very nice to hear about your life and your interests! I think it is really cool that this class has so many different people, all majoring in different fields, and it is cool to read about your interest in computer science! One of my roommates is interested coding and I have been able to watch him learn some cool things about it and even started the process myself!
